For one week, ensembles from the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar (Germany) will perform in the German Pavilion at Expo 2020 in Dubai.
The university is the only German conservatoire to be represented at Expo 2020 in Dubai. At the culture stage, nine instrumental and vocal students will present five different programmes from 5 to 9 January 2022. The artistic director of the delegation, Weimar flute professor Anna Garzuly-Wahlgren, has bundled the five concert programmes into thematic blocks. Songs by John Dowland, a flute quartet by Mozart and Beethoven's “Ode to Joy” in an unusual arrangement will be heard under the motto “Classics”. The programme “Northern Lights” combines works by Edvard Grieg, Carl Nielsen and Arvo Pärt, while “Night Music” presents Kurt Weill's “Lost in the stars” for voice and accordion in addition to Mozart's “Kleine Nachtmusik”.
Under the motto “Dance”, Romanian folk dances by Bartók are juxtaposed with tangos by Piazzolla and the Emperor Waltz by Johann Strauss. Finally, the “German Romantic” era is not to be missed, with arrangements of Richard Wagner, a Schubert quartet, children's scenes by Schumann and Mendelssohn's “Auf den Flügeln des Gesanges” for mezzo-soprano and guitar.
