On Thursday, 30 March 2022, the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) presented its awards for the best pavilions at Expo 2020 Dubai. The German Pavilion, CAMPUS GERMANY, was honoured with the highest award for its theme interpretation in the “XL Pavilion” category, having impressed the jury with its outstanding exhibition and the ideal combination of the interior and the architecture. Following wins at the world exhibitions in Aichi, Zaragoza, Shanghai, Yeosu, Milan and Astana (now Nur Sultan), this German Expo presence (for which the country’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action is responsible) is the seventh to receive the top award.

BIE Day at Expo 2020 Dubai saw the German Pavilion receive the Gold Award in the “XL Pavilions” category for its theme interpretation. The international jury, consisting of representatives of the BIE and the Expo organiser as well as experts in thematic relevance, design and architecture, was particularly impressed by the interactive exhibition. The jury’s members had made several unannounced visits to the Pavilion and commended the innovative concept behind the German Expo contribution, noting that the concept, exhibition and architecture harmonised perfectly. Once again, Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action came up with an inspirational national pavilion.

The German Pavilion concept was designed by Cologne-based company facts and fiction and the building was constructed by NUSSLI Adunic from Switzerland. The architecture was the work of Berlin-based LAVA. Not long before BIE Day, the German Pavilion had already received the EXHIBITOR Magazine’s Editor’s Choice Award and a 2A Magazine Outstanding Pavilion Award for "specially venerated pavilions".

“In addition to the impressive media response and visitor feedback, it’s obviously great for the German Pavilion to get this official recognition from the BIE. We’re delighted that the concept we spent years developing has proven to be as popular as we hoped”, said Dietmar Schmitz, Commissioner General of the German Pavilion.

“We’re very proud that an Expo pavilion organised by Koelnmesse has again won the top BIE award. As this project comes to an end, we’re already gearing up for Expo 2025 in Osaka where we’ll again have the honour of organising the German presence”, announced Gerald Böse, CEO of Koelnmesse GmbH.

As always, the BIE Day Awards Ceremony took place on the penultimate evening of the world exhibition. This year’s event to mark the end of the world exhibition was held at the Expo’s Jubilee Park.

Shortly before the end of the Expo, the first facts and figures on CAMPUS GERMANY have been published: more than 2.5 million visits, including more than 3,000 high-ranking delegations and over 570 press groups. More than 170 guests signed the guest book. The pavilion also welcomed its visitors virtually: around 150,000 people clicked through the exhibition in the so-called Virtual Expo. The smart visitor guidance system of the pavilion made it possible to record some key visitor data: most of the visitors came from India (around 30 %), from Germany (around 10 %) and from the UAE (around 9 %). In total, the German Pavilion welcomed visitors from more than 180 countries.
